About the Club
North Shore Submission Grappling Club is a community driven grappling club based in Takapuna, Auckland.
We specialise in no-gi submission grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, offering training for beginners through to experienced grapplers.
The club operates as an Incorporated Society, meaning it exists for the benefit of its members and the local community rather than for private profit.
Members are encouraged to participate in the direction of the club and contribute to its development.
Our Roots
Heritage
The club’s roots come through Submission Martial Arts, a gym connected to the lineage of John Will and the Brazilian Machado Jiu-Jitsu school.
While we respect this heritage, grappling has evolved significantly.
North Shore Submission Grappling Club represents a modern interpretation of grappling, combining those foundations with contemporary no-gi training methods.
Training Philosophy
Our training emphasises live problem solving and realistic grappling scenarios. Training methods include:
Positional Sparring
Focusing on specific positions to increase technical depth and situational mastery in live scenarios.
Ecological Learning Principles
A modern approach that prioritises live problem-solving and environmental adaptability over static repetition.
Constraint Based Games
Guided discovery through specific rules that force students to perceive and act on technical solutions naturally.
Live Resistance Training
Practising against resistive opponents to develop authentic grappling skill, timing, and robustness.
This approach helps members develop timing, adaptability and effective grappling skill.
Coaching and Instruction
Training is led by experienced practitioners within the club. Higher ranked members serve as club captains, assisting with instruction and helping guide newer members. This collaborative coaching approach exposes members to a wide range of grappling experience and technical perspectives.
